{"id":6265,"date":"2017-02-07T15:04:54","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T15:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/womenwagepeace.org.il\/en\/?p=6265"},"modified":"2022-08-24T10:52:16","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T10:52:16","slug":"donna-kirshbaum-streets-halls-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.womenwagepeace.org.il\/en\/donna-kirshbaum-streets-halls-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Donna Kirshbaum \\ from the streets to the halls of power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>This time we took seats at the table.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>In the two years since our founding, we\u2019ve circled and spoken in front of the\u00a0<em>Knesset<\/em>\u00a0[March 2015, our second national action], marched past it during Oct. 2016\u2019s \u00a0<strong>March of Hope<\/strong>, and most recently rallied outside, weekly, with 120 posters, each bearing the face of an MK [member of parliament] and the words\u00a0<em>What have you done today for an agreement?\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>A strong government makes peace.\u00a0<\/em>This week WWP made more history when we were formally invited inside to launch the\u00a0<strong>Women\u2019s Caucus for Peace and Security<\/strong>, the first of its kind in Israel\u2019s nearly 70-year history. With our support, women MKs will initiate, craft, and pressure colleagues to support legislation leading to greater peace, security, and shared prosperity. In brief, we\u2019ve arrived among our decision-makers and we plan to stay. Our voices have been heard and we\u2019ll continue to make them heard until we reach our one goal: a diplomatic agreement with the Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The launch ceremony demonstrated, once again, our ability to unite as women to demand a secure and peaceful future<\/strong>.\u00a0The limited-seating hall was filled to capacity with WWP members\u00a0 \u2013 easy to spot in white shirts and turquoise scarves \u2013 who had come from throughout the country to support those formally representing us:\u00a0<strong>Yahaloma Zechut\u00a0<\/strong>from Ofakim near the Gaza border [a current steering committee coordinator profiled in the September newsletter];\u00a0<strong>Dr. Rehab Abed Elhalim<\/strong>\u00a0[see article below] from a town near Haifa; retired\u00a0<strong>Judge Saviona Rot-Levy<\/strong>\u00a0from Tel Aviv [co-coordinator of our Government Relations team]; and\u00a0<strong>Michal Froman<\/strong>\u00a0from the West Bank settlement of Tekoa. Founding MKs of the new caucus\u00a0[<em>sh\u2019dula<\/em>\u00a0in Hebrew; often translated as \u201dlobby\u201d]\u00a0<strong>Ksenia Svetlova<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Michal Rozin<\/strong>\u00a0also spoke, joined by\u00a0<strong>Merav Ben Ari, Amir Peretz, Zahava Galon,Yehuda Glick, Eitan Broshi, Yehiel \u2018Hilik&#8217; Bar,\u00a0<\/strong>Deputy Speaker of the Knesset,\u00a0<strong>Revital Swid, Meirav Michaeli<\/strong>\u00a0and others. Well-known academics\u00a0<strong>Prof. Galia Golan\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0Dr. Sarai Aharoni<\/strong>\u00a0offered encouragement, as did\u00a0<strong>Orna Shimroni<\/strong>\u00a0of the \u201cFour Mothers\u201d movement and\u00a0<strong>Sarah Rosenfeld<\/strong>, a twice-bereaved mother from a West Bank settlement who lost a son during his army service and then another to an act of terror last year. WWP members reported being greeted warmly by MKs from the Left and Right who noted the growing strength of our movement, thanked us for bringing peace back into the public discourse, and acknowledged our role in reminding the nation that peace is possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6231 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/womenwagepeace.org.il\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/yahaloma-knesset-31117-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"yahaloma knesset 31117\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Excerpts from Yahaloma\u2019s speech<\/strong>; click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/womenwagepeace.org.il\/en\/yahaloma-zakut-speech30-1-17\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0for entire speech [translated] and\u00a0<strong>here<\/strong>\u00a0for the Hebrew video.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Two years ago\u2026 facing despair, anxiety, and feelings of helplessness and loss of security, a group of determined women chose to create an alternative of hope and peace. We women are waging peace because [we know that] no one else will do it instead\u2026because we\u2019ll never agree to living indefinitely without a sense of security\u2026 and we won\u2019t let up until there is peace. We are here for the sake of our families and future generations. Today, women are waging peace in the Knesset.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>WWP intends to achieve a non-violent end to a reality drenched in blood. We call for bringing the mandate to the people of Israel, to all its citizens, because peace belongs to every one of us. Our movement now has 33,000 supporters worldwide; tens of thousands of women \u2013 Jews and Arabs, from the right, center and left of the political spectrum, religious and secular, participated in the March of Hope this past October. Also [when you reckon our influence] remember that each woman represents an entire family. We have proved to Israel and the world that this is the time for women to claim our power, taking responsibility for our lives and deciding our future, ourselves.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>My name is Yahaloma Zakut. I was born, grew up and raised a family in the development town of Ofakim near the Gaza border, where during incoming rocket fire we have 45 seconds to get to a shelter and where we live our daily lives in the shadow of uncertainty and tension. Today I am the Director of the Hosen [Resilience] Center there and a member of the steering committee of Women Wage Peace.
